Gordon Gale's donation to SAFE
|
17 March 2012
I received a call from the Gale family, whose father has passed away. They asked for no flowers at the service, but suggested a donation to SAFE instead. We have all talked about SAFE being will beneficiaries, but to date hadn’t explored this simple option. The funeral place said it was the most that had been raised on the day, when people have done this before. They told me that they made envelopes, I believe with our logo. I'm hoping their story below will plant the seed for others.
Their Dad used to volunteer at Swan Animal Haven and had rescued many animals through his lifetime.

Dear Sue,
I am writing to tell you about the background to the donation we recently provided to SAFE on behalf of Gordon Gale. Gordon was an ardent animal lover who hated the thought of an animal being hungry or otherwise suffering. Throughout his life Gordon helped all the stray cats and dogs that crossed his path, either by looking after them, or adopting them as his own pet. When Gordon died from melanoma recently we decided to encourage people to make a donation to SAFE as an alternative to flowers. We included this request in the funeral notice in the West Australian newspaper, and we provided people with donation envelopes at the funeral service. The envelopes were marked with "A donation to SAFE (Saving Animals From Euthanasia) on behalf of Gordon Gale would be appreciated". The funeral service raised $650 and we are aware of at least another $200 donated directly to SAFE.
The process itself required very little extra effort and raised a sum of money which was greatly appreciated by SAFE. We felt that this gesture on behalf of Gordon was a wonderful way to show appreciation for Gordon's values and his loving character.
Attached is a photograph of Gordon with his last adopted dog, Koda. Koda was a stray puppy found dumped at a park nearby to Gordon's home three years ago.
Warm regards,
Pamela, Christine, Peter and Julie (Gordon's wife and children)
